10 Questions with a Soul-Stirring Artist Redefining Reggae’s Emotional Landscape

In the ever-evolving world of music, few artists capture the essence of vulnerability and strength quite like Kristine Alicia. Her latest single “Mek Love” is more than just a track—it’s a testament to the transformative power of music. We sat down with this Houston-based Jamaican artist to dive deep into her creative process, personal journey, and the profound musical narrative she’s crafting.

The Birth of “Mek Love”: A Song from the Sickbed

Your latest single “Mek Love” has an incredibly intimate origin. Can you walk us through how a moment of illness became a creative breakthrough?

I received a riddim from Kyle at Cyclone Records who needed it urgently. But I was sick, my voice was gone from a cold, and I was stressed out. Instead of seeing this as a setback, I decided to write the song right there in bed. I imagined someone taking care of me—cooking soup, healing me with love. I put myself in the position of both the singer and the one being sung to. And then, miraculously, the words came.

Musical Evolution: A Life Journal

Your musical style has expanded beyond traditional gospel-driven reggae. How would you describe this artistic transformation?

My creative process has always been about documenting my life journey. It’s not an intentional switch, but a natural progression. My music is simply a reflection of whatever phase I’m experiencing at the moment.

Visual Storytelling: The “Mek Love” Music Video

The upcoming music video for “Mek Love” sounds intriguing. What can fans expect?

I want the visuals to capture that incredible feeling of surrendering to love’s safety. My goal is for viewers to connect with either character—whether as the giver or receiver of healing love. It’s about creating a universal emotional experience.

Grief, Music, and Survival

You’ve spoken about losing your husband. How did this profound loss reshape your approach to music?

Music became my lifeline, my survival mechanism. In my grief, I learned to create without fear, to be completely transparent. I stopped caring about external opinions and focused on creating for myself. This journey transformed me into a more confident and authentic artist.

Collaborative Energies

You’re working with Cyclone Music Group and Hungry Belly Records. How has this partnership influenced your sound?

What started as a potential one-time collaboration on a riddim album called “Tears of Life” might become something more. Like love itself, musical partnerships can surprise you—we’ll see where this journey takes us.

Homecoming and Recognition

You’re set to perform at The Essence of Music Festival in Kingston. What does this mean to you?

It’s an incredible honor. While I represent Jamaica and reggae from my home in Houston, it feels profoundly meaningful that my home country is ready to hear my new creative expressions.

The Love Album: A Musical Diary

Tell us about your upcoming love album that you’ve been crafting for two years.

This album is a creative exploration of love’s many textures—the entire dating and love experience. Essentially, I wrote a song every time I was happy or sad. It’s a musical diary of emotional landscapes.

Spirituality and Musical Expression

Your music consistently carries a spiritual undertone. How do you maintain this while exploring diverse musical styles?

Spirituality, for me, is about authentic self-expression. Love is another form of spirituality. My music is simply a genuine reflection of my journey, connecting with spirit through sound.

Reggae’s Evolving Landscape

Where do you see your unique musical approach fitting into modern reggae?

A: I’m grateful to work with producers who help me stay true to reggae’s foundations. My background in classical and jazz gives me the freedom to explore and expand within the genre.

The Healing Power of Music

What do you hope listeners take away from “Mek Love” and your upcoming work?

With “Mek Love,” I want listeners to experience the healing flow and safety of love. For the upcoming album, I hope people find songs that resonate with their own journey—to understand that all life phases are valid, and there’s security in embracing love’s complexity.

Kristine Alicia isn’t just making music—she’s creating a sanctuary of sound where vulnerability becomes strength, and personal pain transforms into universal hope.
